Jack R. Morgan, Chair of the 38th District Republican Committee, today released the following statement about Supervisor Mike Hymes’ (D-Tazewell) campaign tour with Senate Democratic Leader Richard L. “Dick” Saslaw (D-Fairfax):
“You can tell a lot about a man by the company he keeps. That Mike Hymes would campaign in Southwest alongside a Northern Virginia liberal like Dick Saslaw speaks volumes about him and the type of Senator he would be.
“In 2012, Saslaw revealed what he thought about law-abiding gun owners. On a day when the Senate was debating gun control legislation he supported, Saslaw said in public ‘I see we’re debating a gun bill today. Half the cast of ‘Deliverance’ is in town.’ Those outrageous comments showed his disdain for Virginians living in rural areas.
“Dick Saslaw has never seen a tax increase he didn’t like. During one Senate debate on a tax increase, Saslaw said, ‘You can’t give me enough money to satisfy me.’ Having voted for billions in higher taxes since then, it’s clear he meant it.
“If Mike Hymes were elected, Northern Virginia’s Dick Saslaw would be in charge of a Senate dominated by Northern Virginia Democrats. Southwest cannot afford to have our livelihood undercut with radical anti-coal policies or our values mocked by elitist leaders from inside the Beltway.
“Of course, Mike Hymes wants to make sure 38th District voters don’t have a chance to see him campaigning with Dick Saslaw today. Cynically, he and the Senate Democrat Leader are only appearing in front of Democrat audiences, closed to the public and media. I suppose he’ll follow the same policy when Senate Democrat Caucus Chairman and gun control advocate Don McEachin – who with Mike Hymes in the Senate would be Chairman of the Senate Courts of Justice Committee – comes to campaign for him. It makes you wonder how many of his 19 would-be Senate Democrat colleagues Mike Hymes’s campaign will allow their candidate to actually be seen with here in Southwest Virginia before August 19?
“Even though he won’t allow himself to be photographed with them before the special election, Mike Hymes is fully prepared to put the Obama Democrats in charge of Virginia. With our jobs, lifestyle and Second Amendment rights on the line, we just can’t afford that.”
